Schools excluding pupils to protect their ranking in league tables - Tutor Hunt Blog
Schools excluding pupils to protect their ranking in league tables Schools excluding pupils to protect their ranking in league tables Schools excluding pupils to protect their ranking in league tablesSchoolsI attended a well known school that was acclaimed for its consistant high standing in academic league tables. It boasted impressive figures that proclaimed (according to my memory, faded now with age) `95% of pupils achieve an A, B or C at GCSE` - along with concomitant claims for A-level results`. Who wouldn`t be impressed by these results? What parent wouldn`t want to send their child to this school? Such exemplary grades could only be the result of some supreme teaching method. I recall hearing that the ratio of applicants to places exceeded ten to one. I was indeed lucky to attend such a prestigious place of learning, that could guarantee me such high grades. The way the school actually achieved such impressive grades was somewhat disheartening. It wasn`t so much down to exemplary teaching, or the creation of a nurturing learning environment, but something more basic and effective: if you weren`t expected to get a high enough grade, you were simply booted off the course. At both A-level and GCSE pupils were of course issued predicted grades - for those unlikely to achieve grades that would compliment the school`s standing in the league tables, they were ushered onto another course, or even granted more time to focus on their remaining subjects, with one less exam to concern themselves with. There are actually many schools that employ these practices, but that could soon be set to change. The Education Secretary Damon Hinds has said he will be penalising schools that exclude pupils with the aim to improve league tables. At the moment his proposal is only to be concerned with exclusions due to unruly behaviour, but it is hoped that this will shine a light on the practice of removing pupils from courses in order to favour the school`s league table placement. There has been a huge increase in the number of pupils being permanently excluded in recent years, and there are concerns that a significant portion are being removed mainly to protect the school`s league table results. The number of permanent exclusions fell by nearly half between 2006-7 and 2012-13. In the last 5 years however it has risen by a precipitous 40%. A recent Home Office report has highlighted the fact that teenagers who are expelled from school are far more likely to enter a life of crime. Hardly a surprising announcement: if a pupil has nowhere do go during the day, and is unbounded by the civilising constraints of teachers and parents, they are certainly in danger of straying into more unsavoury territories. The Education secretary said he could understand that individual pupils can have a hugely disruptive impact on the rest of the class, and can capitalise upon a teacher`s time, preventing them getting through their lesson schedule. He went on to say however that expelling a child should `only ever be a last resort`. `But being excluded should never be at the cost of a child`s education. No matter the obstacles they may face or the backgrounds they`re from, we want our young people to receive an education that fosters ambition and a confidence in their abilities.` A school should never compromise on its core mandate: to educate every pupil in attendance. To exclude a pupil because they are being disruptive is just passing the problem onto someone else - but to exclude a pupil because they may negatively affect the league table results is a deplorable abnegation of a school`s responsibilities. 16 months ago0Add a Comment

Where Do You Find Chemistry Textbook Answers?
Where Do You Find Chemistry Textbook Answers?Reading AP Chemistry textbook answers can be a daunting task to take on. There are many different authors and companies that have created this kind of reading a book, and a lot of websites exist which will offer different answers to common questions. This kind of problem solving method is known as 'discussion board' method.Finding a book that you really like but it is just not available at your area college library can be a real challenge. This is where the discussion board method comes in.These discussion boards are set up by the author or a company who has created the board site. This is a great way to find a book that you might not otherwise have access to. If the website seems too easy to use or seem overly complicated, this is probably not the right solution for you.Since there are so many people on these boards, there is a chance that you could run into someone who has already run into the same problem. You don't want to find yoursel f having to look up the answer because they've already found it. If you're hoping to learn something new about chemistry, then this is probably not the right option for you.A good science textbook should be fairly simple to use. You should not have to look up every single phrase in the text because that might be overkill. After all, you are looking for chemistry textbook answers to common questions, not memorizing the entire book in an attempt to memorize every single word. It's important to note that the board site is not affiliated with the author of the book. This is just a site created by someone who wanted to have some fun while answering questions that might not have been answered by the author of the book. For the most part, it's fine.As long as you are in the correct forum, there is no reason not to participate on the board site. Most will require you to sign up in order to use their website, and it's a free service. It's not a bad thing to register on the board, even if you don't expect to get any good chemistry textbook answers.
Organic Chemistry Practice Exams - How to Study Well For Organic Chemistry Practice Exams
Organic Chemistry Practice Exams - How to Study Well For Organic Chemistry Practice ExamsOrganic chemistry practice exams provide you with an opportunity to get a feel for the syllabus of the course, which is the most important factor in order to learn the course well. It's important to note that it is very much similar to the full course syllabus. There are three types of exams: local, public and international. Each has its own set of format. The local exam is usually offered during the school year. It is the exam that is given on the very first day of a new semester. The public exam is also a free one. It is given once every two weeks. The schedule of the exam changes every week. The international exam is the exam for the country that you are studying in.Before you even start studying for an exam, you need to know how many questions you will be required to answer correctly. There are two kinds of question papers. The multiple-choice one and the essay one. The multiple-choice paper is usually longer, with more subjects, and the essay paper is shorter, with a single topic.Exams are quite hard and the students who pass them normally get to go through the same course every year. But it's essential that you have some idea about the syllabus of your class before you start studying. The first thing that you need to do when you start studying for the exams is to read the periodic table and its chemical structure. Then you need to identify different elements and the number of each element in the periodic table. The element with the lowest atomic number must belong to the list of those you have read before. It is also imperative that you understand the electronic charge of the elements.Another vital element to remember about organic chemistry practice exams is the periodic table. Make sure that you study all the elements that make up this table and not the ones that are merely grouped together. The periodic table is not necessary for the organic chemistry course but is ve ry important if you want to excel at this course. So, remember to study everything about the periodic table.

Online Scientific Notation Converter Tutors
Online Scientific Notation Converter Tutors Scientific notation is a way to represent very large number and very small numbers. Scientific notation is a very useful notation to represent many numbers. The decimal point is placed such that there is one non-zero digit to the left of the decimal. The exponent of 10 is decided by the number of decimal spaces the numbers has moved from the originally given number. The sign of the exponent is decided depending on the given number. If the number is less than one then the exponent of 10 is negative. If the number is greater than one then the exponent of 10 is positive. Example 1: Convert the number 5,670,000 to scientific notation form regular notation? Solution: Given is the number 5,670,000 which is a number greater than one. The number can be written with a decimal point such that there is one digit to the left. Moving the decimal point 6 spaces gives 5.67 and the exponent of 10 as 6. This gives 5,670,000 number is equal to 5.67 * 106. Hence the scientific notation is 5.67 * 106. Example 2: Convert the number 0.000345 to scientific notation form regular notation? Solution: Given is the number 0.000345 which is a number lesser than one. The number can be written with a decimal point such that there is one digit to the left. Moving the decimal point 4 spaces gives 3.45 and the exponent of 10 as -4. This gives 0.000345 number is equal to 3.45 * 10-4. Hence the scientific notation is 3.45 * 10-4.
3 Internship Goals to Set Right Now
3 Internship Goals to Set Right Now This post is part of a month-long series to help you start 2018 on the right foot. Throughout January, visit the Varsity Tutors blog for advice, tips, and tricks on how to reignite your passion for learning this winter. Internships can provide college students with the opportunity to gain experience in their desired field before graduation. After landing an internship, its important to focus on getting the most out of the experience. One great way to ensure this? Make a list of goals to accomplish during your internship, such as remaining open to new experiences and taking advantage of networking opportunities. Here are three internship goals to set right now: Internship goal #1: Challenge yourself An internship can offer you the opportunity to practice adaptability and to challenge yourself in new ways. Often, as an intern, you will be asked to perform a variety of taskssometimes with short notice. Dont view this as a negative. Instead, use this as a chance to show your supervisor that you can handle the challenges thrown your way and can provide a quick turnaround on projects. Since an internship can, at times, lead to a full-time position within an organization, illustrate the benefit you would pose to the company by asking questions or volunteering ideas. Show others that you can contribute to the mission of the organization, and that you could be a valuable asset. A challenging internship can keep you on your toes and teach you skills that you can take with you into the job field. [RELATED: How to Get Real-World Experience in Your College Major] Internship goal #2: Network One benefit of an internship is the potential to form valuable connections with other people in the organization. Connect with your supervisor, as well as with people in the areas and roles you may be interested in. Use these connections to discover more about the field you are pursuing. If there are other interns at your organization, they are also valuable connections. You can maintain connections with these people, even after the internship has ended, in order to find out about future opportunities. Regardless of your role as an intern within the organization, expanding your professional network is a great benefit.[RELATED: Why You Should Pursue an Internship in College] Internship goal #3: Be honest with yourself At its core, the reasoning for an internship is to gain experience in your field in order to obtain full-time employment upon graduation. Internships, even if they are required by your degree program, are a time to discover what your future career might look like. Be honest with yourself if it is not what you expected, and make any adjustments necessary to your plan. If you have a semester-long internship, and by the end you know this is not the type of job you wish to do upon graduation, thats okay. Internships are learning experiences, and the perfect opportunity to discover your niche in your desired field. On the other hand, if you love your internship and your future career goals are validated, use this knowledge to jumpstart your career plans. Consider applying for another internship, continue to network with professionals in your field, and begin looking into companies you think fit your vision. Before beginning your internship, make a list of goals, including things you hope to accomplish during your experience and any expectations you may have. This will help you to be more present during your experience and effectively evaluate it afterwards. [RELATED:3 Things to Know About College Co-op Programs] Any topics you want to know more about? It can be frustrating, a little dull, and often lonely. We all feel like this when working on our own towards assessments which our teachers tell us are of the utmost importance or completely crucial to our lives. This pressure is not entirely fair. You know that itâs not exactly the most helpful thing in the world and, as you get older, youâll see that itâs also not actually entirely true. But first, letâs try and change the way we think about exam preparation.Firstly, no matter what happens, itâs not the end of the world. GCSE exams are important, yes, but you neednât strain yourself or push yourself far too hard in the subjects you are studying. As youâve probably heard, to study efficiently and effectively is better than working hard. Secondly, letâs try to cultivate an enjoyment of the subject you are studying. This doesnât mean that you have to love every bit. But you will find revision much easie r if you can appreciate at least some parts of the curriculum. A small proportion is enough. So, sit down and think through the syllabus, and try to recognise a favourite part. Or alternatively, think about something that you enjoy and try to fit it into the framework of the exam â" as this will encourage you to revise a little more.A meander - every geography student's favourite landform, for some reason. What Geography OffersWhen it comes to geography â" whether human geography or physical geography â" you will find that there will be things that do interest you. If you have ever been interested in injustice in the world, you might benefit from delving further into ideas such as the urban environment, globalization and development, and global warming. If, on the other hand, you have always been someone who likes science â" chemistry maybe, or biology â" you could spend more time thinking about the ecology or geology parts of your programme.Geography is interesting and, whilst y ou may not immediately think so, it is such a broad subject that there must be at least one thing that makes you want to pay closer attention. So, before anything else, find that thing, and let your appreciation of it help with moving you towards your examination and your subsequent achievement. Itâs worth taking a moment to do this, as it will help your enthusiasm in the long run. Online Revision Resources for GCSE GeographyOnce you have thought about what you like, itâs time to get started. And one of the best ways to begin â" interactive, enjoyable, and effective in its attempt to get facts to actually stick â" is through the internet. There are hundreds of different resources available and, over your course of revision, youâll find the ones that suit you best. BBC BitesizeBBCâs Bitesize is an institution, having provided students of geography and other subjects with articles, information, and quizzes that are clear, fun, and engaging. Whether itâs cultural geography y ou are studying or something like hydrology â" the fancy term for the study of water â" youâll find all the fundamental facts that you require for your geography course.Revision WorldA competitor to Bitesize is Revision World, a site that compiles information on every topic in your geography specification. Whilst this site is less interactive in its approach â" as it is merely a compilation of texts â" the details given are comprehensive. Itâs a perfect site for those looking for quick facts and concepts. They cover everything from coastal and river landscape to population, resource management, and tectonic activity.Internet GeographyFinally, for this section, try Internet Geography. This is a website that focuses mainly on physical geography, from coasts and erosion to environmental problems, earthquakes, and ecosystems. Whilst not specifically directed towards your course, it is a great resource for those looking to find information which isnât immediate, obvious, and wh ich the examiners havenât necessarily seen a hundred times before. An incredible geography case study for urbanisation: La Paz, Bolivia.Case StudiesAll geography topics at GCSE will have a relevant case study that you will need to research and know. These are important as they tie the theoretical ideas that you will be taught to the real world in which we live. Whether itâs on the preparation for an outcome of a particular volcano or earthquake, or on the management of space within the boundaries of a city, case studies will make you look at the world outside of your classroom. How best can you learn these things then? As said above, you should first find a case study that you know or that might be interesting to you. Do you live in a big city that might be interesting to think about in terms of urban geography? Do you remember a particular earthquake â" or have you been to a place that experienced one recently? A personal attachment to the case study will make you more intereste d in the topic! For a learner this is key! Yet, we have not mentioned one of the most interesting ways to develop the breadth of your knowledge of the topics you have studied. This is reading newspapers and magazines. Whilst you might think that only adults read these things, they are super helpful in giving you up-to-date information on every different subject. Try a newspaper like The Guardian or The Times, or a beautiful magazine like National Geographic or Geographical. Just flick through them and see what you find, but we bet that youâll come across something that both interests you and is relevant to your course.GCSE Textbooks and Revision WorkbooksIn terms of taking in geographical knowledge, then, the final important resource that you can use is textbooks, workbooks, and revision books. These will be designed to fit your course â" in terms of content and exam structure â" and so will make up an important part of the organisation of your revision. In these books â" from CGP, My Revision Notes, and Revise Edexcel, just as examples â" will be explained the fundamental concepts for your course â" alongside every different requirement of your particular exam board.
